Rethinking the domain name.

Well after a lot of research, and I do mean a lot, I have chosen a domain name. You might think that this is an easy task, but the domain name is very important.

A couple of things you really need to keep in mind when you select a domain name is keywords and how easy the name is to remember. The obsticle to overcome is availability.

Orginally I had come up with internationalonlinechessnetwork.com. Although good for keywords and availability, it is simply to long. So I decided to shorten it up to internationalchessnetwork.com. I needed to wait awhile for this to become available and it finally did, but this gave me time to think about the name. It's a good name, but I realized I had forgotten a very good keyword, Internet! ShaBam! internetchessnetwork.com is available. Now that is a good one. It will directly compete with the other Internet Chess domains head on, and that is my intention.

So, the name will be internetchessnetwork.com icn for short and branding. Easy to remember, targeted keywords, a really good domain name for my chess server and network. Time to go registar...

What to call the new domain?

Choosing a new domain name needs serious thought. My fist thought was 'chess zone' and we found chess-zone.com available. Personally, I like the name chess zone, and was somewhat single minded about the name as well. Now, I am not sure. There are a couple of compelling reasons why this is not the correct name for the new site.

To begin with, the site will be running social network software called phpFox, offering the same features youTube.com, or myspace.com, its way cool. That being the case brought up the issue to choose, and register a domain name. Well, like I said, chess-zone.com is available, but I got to thinking about the search engines. Hum, chess zone... Cool name but not what I could call a 'robust' search term, especially considering the site will be featuring a social network. The name needs to be reconsidered.

What to do and where to start.

What to do, what to do? Well, its obvious, need to find a domain name that expresses the nature of the website. Hum, where to start? Oh, yes, define the nature of the site, by writing it down!

Let's see -- A social network for chess players of all ages. Interact with players from around the world, create teams, tournaments, and networks. Alright, that's pretty good for a start. It still needs some work to develop a tag line, but it will do for now. Next thing to do is to move on, and define the target base.

Zero in on the target.

Ok, we are on the Internet, so the target base is global. This has two distract advantages; helps to keep you focused on the big picture, allowing you to think out of the box, and helps a person from becoming single minded in their thoughts. Our primary target group will be collage students, and young business types, 20-35 age group. While the secondary target group will be kids and teens.

Nice, these are both two good choices for a target audience as they migrate well with each other, and there numbers are growing. Good entry point and as the site develops, they tend to be more devoted guests.

Now for a domain name.

Another easy one, get online and start searching for domain name to see what is available. Fire up a browser and start Google searches for the domain names you come up with to see where the competition is, and what they are doing.

Hum, (I tend to do a lot of head scratching) the target audience is global, so we want a word to express a global nature. Global and international come to mind right off. Let's check Google for 'global chess' and 'international chess.' Global chess came up with 1.4 million results while international chess delivered 3.5 million results. International will be one word for the domain name. Chess has to be in there, that's a given, and this is a social network. Ok, let's see what 'social chess' and 'chess network' brings up. Interesting, social chess and chess social bring up the same number of results, 1.4 million. Chess network delivers 1.8 million, a little bit better keyword there, so chess network will be added to international.

Ok! So far we have internationalchessnetwork, let's check it our for availability. Crap, that domain is not available. Alright, not a problem, chess needs to be further defined, or rather categorized. Well, damn, that area is wide open with chess this and chess that, I need to narrow this down to two or three choices first. Again, back to what is the site about. Well, it is a network that is kind of a club, hum, chess club... The site also features a free online chess server. Well that gives me four keyword to work with right there, free, online, club, and server. Now, to narrow this down to just one name, the others will be used later on as the site develops.

Ok, free is out. Although free is a very good search term, it has to many associations with spam... Bonk--Reject! That leaves online chess and server so let's take a look at chess server, chess online, and chess club. Chess server delivered 1.4 million results, chess online delivered 11.8 million results, and chess club delivered 2.5 million results. In case your wondering, I did check free chess and it delivered 11.4 million results so it looks like online chess out performs free by a small margin, and I didn't need it after all, so online it is our winner...

Now to put it all together, internationalonlinechessnetwork. Man, is that a mouthful, but what the heck... Quick check of availablitly, Bing-0, internationalonlinechessnetwork.com is available! Good, that is a keyword rich domain name that expresses the nature of the website. I can see the brand right now... IOCN - International Online Chess Network. Slip the word free into a title tag somewhere with a couple of uses, and bam... The website should do very well out the gate in a wide variety of search phrases with the word chess.

Chess Zone Update Wow, I haven't posted here at all. I started this blog as a way to keep track of the new chess site I am developing. To date, there has been a lot of planning and brain storming involved. A lot of that is out of the way now, and it is looking like next week we (The hosting company and I.) will start putting scripts a server to host the new site. Currently we plan to feature a full chess server with both, a free online chess service, and a membership chess service. Not only that, we have plans to offer 'chess in the classroom' at no charge to all educational institutions who wish to participate. Our hosting provider has agreed to partner this adventure with us. Now, a little update as to what has been happening. A decision has been made to the chess platforms we will be providing. For members we will be hosting the Jin chess server. This is a telnet platform for real time play, and it doesn't get any better. Plenty of features for all skill levels. Quick as a bunny, while lag time will be supported with timeseal. There will be some very special features for members that other chess servers currently do not offer. Our free online chess server will be HOT! Geared for novice play, we are developing a java applet with some very interesting features. This will be a proprietary chess program that is currently under development. This is exciting. The next 4 to 8 weeks are going to be hectic so I may not get over here that often, however I will try to break away a couple time a week for more updates.
